Learning from Loss: Don't say "I'm sorry for your loss"

This is a chance to be open, vulnerable and raw. Instead of saying that we are sorry for someone’s loss, perhaps we could say, “I’m sorry I don’t know what to say.” or “I can’t imagine what it is you are feeling.” Being in-genuine here does not help anyone and the person on the receiving end can tell. Saying “I’m sorry for your loss” is an attempt at empathy, but it still falls short of the mark.
